Admiral Ballard’s Memoirs: Part II, Midshipman

By Admiral G A Ballard, published February 1976

Abstract

The second part of Admiral Ballard’s memoir continues the narrative from MM 61/4. After passing out of Britannia in 1876, Ballard served in the Channel Squadron, and then in the Mediterranean Fleet during the latter stages of the Russo-Turkish War. Of particular note is his eyewitness description of the British squadron transiting the Dardanelles in February 1878.   He also makes detailed observations on many aspects of shipboard life in the late 19th century.
