The Battle of the Tayang in 1894 during the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-5 ‘was the first which used steel ships and great ordnance, the weapons of the machine age.’ This article accounts for the intensity of the battle by informing the reader of the action as it occurred, and the devastations that followed. Through this account J. C. Perry concludes that it was a consequence of the ‘newer and far better equipped’ Japanese navy which provided the crushing victory; to the surprise of even the Japanese public.
