Blake’s Capture of the French Fleet Before Calais on 4 September 1652

By J. R. Powell, published August 1962

Abstract

Set within a discussion on the foreign politics of the commonwealth and Cromwell¹s endeavour to gain both an alliance with France and ownership of Dunkirk, the author uses conflicting reports from both sides to examine what happened at the capture of a French fleet as reprisals while France was neutral during the Dutch war, preventing France relieving the Spanish siege at Dunkirk.
