Blake’s Reduction of the Scilly Isles in 1651

By Rev. J. R. Powell, published August 1931

Abstract

At the end of the English Civil War, a Dutch fleet under Tromp appeared off the Royalist-occupied Scilly Isles with the aim of redressing Royalist interference to Dutch shipping. Fearing this would lead to an attempt to seize the islands, the Commonwealth sent Blake to resolve the crisis. Scarce details exist but Blake achieved the aim of not only persuading Tromp to return to Holland but also of capturing the islands from the Royalist forces.
