Abstract
The opening blurb in the first of these two books says that the 21st Century Foundations series ‘gives modern perspective to the great strategists and military philosophers of the past, placing their writings, principles, and theories with modern discussions and debates’. The aim is less to supply answers – more to identify questions that will help us face ‘the challenges of the future’. It is a nice idea, not least because it also provides an opportunity to have another look not just at the thoughts of Alfred Thayer Mahan (an examination of whose writings began the series) but also at some of the military writers of the past who are perhaps not so well known.
