The United States Submarine Nautilus was the Dreadnought of the nuclear age; when she was launched on 21 January 1954 she transformed the naval world in an instant. For here was the first ever nuclear-powered submarine and her mighty offspring would forever change the dynamics of sea power. This was a true submarine, capable of girdling the globe entirely underwater using a self-contained source of seemingly limitless motive power. Such submarines thereafter provided the strategic nuclear missile platforms of choice. As the author writes, ‘the nuclear submarine simply needed to get to sea and submerge. Once it was below the water, it was the most feared deterrent.’
