In 1695 the Amsterdam bookseller Johan ten Hoorn published a curious book. Entitled American Voyages to River Berbice and Surinam, the book contains the recollections of the voyages made by the Dutchman Adriaan van Berkel to the Dutch colonies of Berbice and Surinam on the ‘Wild Coast of South America’ in the early 1670s and late 1680s. Adriaan van Berkel’s American Voyages is a valuable primary source because it is one of the few eyewitness accounts of these Dutch colonies during the late seventeenth century…
