Abstract
The Dutch have a long tradition of maritime historiography that emphasized the admirals, the merchant companies, and great sea battles. Jaap Bruijn, professor emeritus of maritime history at Leiden University, greatly contributed to changing this field. He looked at the common sailor as much as he researched the people in charge, as can be seen in his various publications, including his book The Dutch Navy in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries. When he chaired the maritime history department in Leiden (1977–2003), he was the only full professor of maritime history in the Netherlands.
