Destroyer Action, Ile de Batz, 9 June 1944

By John Watkins, published August 1992

Abstract

This account from the bridge of Ashanti during the attempt by German destroyers to interdict the British invasion convoys gives a fascinating insight into the events of the action. Divided into four parts, the first sets the scene for the action, giving the background to the vessels in the British and German forces. The second describes the action from the time Ashanti sighted the German torpedo ships, the departure of the Polish contingent, to the sinking of target vessel.   The third reveals the part Ultra played in the confrontation, where the Briish vessel were able to anticipate exactly where to patrol to intercept the German vessels. The author concludes by trying to establish the sequence of events in the German vessels.
