The Devonport Figureheads

The author, viewing the lamentable state of figureheads stored in the dockyard (fire) engine shed and adjoining enclosed spaces asks, “Is there no one who will take the matter in hand?” To support his urgent preservation appeal he refers to figurehead losses by fire in the sail-loft at Portsmouth and the Plymouth fire of 1840.
