Document: Commodore Johnstone’s Improvements 1779

The letter from Commodore George Johnstone to the Admiralty sought permission to make a number of changes to the equipment of his command, HMS Romney. These included, amongst others, installing two windlasses on the forecastle to help with handling the rig and exchanging the common yawl for a cheaper and better sailing Norway Yawl or American Whale Boat. The Admiralty passed the request to the Navy Board, having approved the changes.
