Document: Lieutenants’ Instructions 1677

Abstract

Samuel Pepys’ letter of 18 December 1677 spells out the new regulations applying to the future appointment of lieutenants in RN ships. To ensure these officers were equipped to assume command, should it be necessary, they would henceforth be required to have a minimum amount of sea-time and pass an examination prior to promotion.
