Document: Midshipmen Extra and Volunteers

This order of 1 July 1676 from the Board of Admiralty is the first general regulation issued laying down the numbers and conditions under which Midshipmen Extra and Volunteers would be allocated to RN ships. The regulations were to encourage the sons of the wealthy to train for command in the Navy and to offer continued employment to Commanders and Lieutenants who would otherwise be unemployed during times of peace.
