Abstract

Lieutenant Joshua Cole, Gunnery Lt. of HMS Arethusa, gives a very detailed analysis of the preparations, the management of the warship and the results of the ramming of Italian warships at the Battle of Lissa. His account of events shows that the decision to ram in such circumstances was not a ‘spur of the moment’ decision but had been carefully thought through ahead of the engagement.
