Egyptian Shipping of About 1500 B.C.

By Carl V Sølver, published November 1936

Abstract

The author explains that his article may be considered ‘an amplification –and occasionally as a criticism – of the series of articles published by Admiral Ballard in The Mariner’s Mirror of 1920 under the title “The Sculptures of Der-el-Bahri”. The sandstone reliefs at Der-el-Bahri provide valuable material for the study of ancient Egyptian shipping –the author describes the ships portrayed, voyages and types of cargo carried as well as information on Arab navigation of the Red Sea and Suez Canal. The article is well illustrated with line drawings and photographs.
