The English Fleet at the Battle of Portland
Abstract
This article discusses a two-page document found in the National Maritime Museum and containing a list of ships and captains that fought the Dutch in February 1652. The document deals with only two of the three squadrons involved. Details of the third squadron are added; omissions and errors are noted as are reasons for the deployment of individual ships and officers. Seventy two ships are listed and details of actual involvement in the battle are given.
