English Fleet-Lists in the First Dutch War

By R.C. Anderson, published November 1938

Abstract

Out of the nine general naval actions of the war of 1652-4 there are only three where we can give a really satisfactory list of the English ships present; the first battle of the war off Dover and the two actions in the Mediterranean. With regard to the rest we vary between almost complete ignorance, in the case of Ayscue’s action off Plymouth, and comparatively full knowledge, for Dungeness, Portland and the Gabbard. The attempt at complete lists of the English fleets and their captains at the battles of the war set out here comes with caveats as to their accuracy.
