An Epoch in Models
Abstract
This paper is an introduction to the collection of 52 half block models of warships held in the Naval Architecture Department of the Royal Naval College, Greenwich. The models span the years between 1860 and 1910, marking a time of massive development in the design and construction of warships and the change from broadsides to the use of turrets to give all-round fire. The author uses the models to demonstrate the development of ship design from the revolutionary HMS Warrior to HMS Leander, one of the first cruisers with shipborne aircraft.
