Four Dordrecht Ships of the Sixteenth Century

By Richard W Unger, published May 1975

Abstract

The author describes in detail illustrations of four ships from the second half of the 1560’s which appear in a “koerboek” or book of laws published at that time in Dordrecht. Each illustration is of a different type of ship, two being native to the area, a buss and a boyer. The two from elsewhere are a Portuguese caravelle and a small Mediterranean galley. Although of varying quality and inexact in certain respects, the paper argues that they provide useful information about the types of ships used in South Holland in the mid-sixteenth century.
