George Redmond Hulbert: Prize Agent at Halifax, Nova Scotia, 1812-14

By Anthony Gutridge, published February 2001

Abstract

George Hulbert served as flag secretary to the admiral commanding the North American Station during the War of 1812. One of his principal duties was to serve as flag agent, collecting and distributing prize money for the flag officer and potentially others as well. This was a profitable position that required considerable economic, legal, and political knowledge and skills. Although the profits resulting from the capture of American prizes during the war were less than anticipated, Hulbert was able to enjoy a secure retirement after returning home in 1814.
