Historic Architecture of H.M.A. Naval Dockyard Garden Island N.S.W. Australia

By Eric J. Martin and Howard Tanner, published November 1988

Abstract

Following the settling of the Sydney area in 1788 periodic consideration was given to the foundation of a naval dockyard with several proposals emerging post 1851. In 1883 funds for the creation of a dockyard were voted. This coincided with a period of affluence in Australia which resulted in ebullient architecture being used and the elaborate buildings resulting, many of which survive, are described in detail. Article concludes with a brief discussion of 20th century developments including the construction of the graving dock completed in 1945 and the Japanese midget submarine attack against the harbour in 1942.
