Abstract

A summary of 20 years research into the appearance, and fitting out of the Beagle as adapted as a survey vessel at the time of Darwin’s voyage from 1831-1836.The NMM had the plans of the Beagle only as the unadapted 10 gun brig. Author used the 1817 revised design of the brigs and Fitzroy’s description of the raising of the deck in 1831 together with Darwin’s sketches of the main cabin from his personal papers since presented by his granddaughter Nora Barlow to Cambridge University as well as plans of another brig of the class fitted as a packet to research and produce plans (illustrated)and a model.
