Abstract

The article describes the difficulties inherent in devising a self-evident scheme of signal flags.       It goes on to explain the evolution of signal flags, making the point that the most succesful flags were simple in design and suitable optically. The Marryat Code of Signals for the Merchant Service was part of the proliferation of codes.
