Hydrography: a Note on the Equipage of Eighteenth Century Survey Vessels

The monumental four volumes of charts and maps entitled Atlantic Neptune, published in 1777,offers to students of such matters, many doubts about the surveying methods employed for their production. Some of them were cleared by G.N.D. Evans (M’sM August 1966). This paper lists the fittings and equipment of a chartered ship for survey.  He transcribes the opportune Charter Party detailing a long list of sails and other nautical objects, the necessary leads and lines for sounding, time glasses, etc., and these are followed by the provisions necessary for the crew.
