John Barnard the Younger, Shipbuilder of Ipswich and Harwich 1705-1784

Based on letters and warship builds, this article describes Barnard’s shipyard organisation and application of capital and management to the expansion from the Orwell to Harwich to build ever larger warships whilst working with Thomas Slade under Navy Board contracts through the Spanish war of 1739 to America in 1775, culminating in a discussion of the possible causes of his bankruptcy in 1781.
