John Holand, a Fifteenth Century Admiral

By J. A. Walker, published August 1979

Abstract

John Holand was a child of the High Middle Ages, having been born in 1396. Aged 19 he fought at Agincourt and the following year was a commander at a victorious fleet action in the English Channel. His next promotion was to second-in-command to the Admiral of England, Ireland and Aquitaine and, having served under two Admirals, he rose to that rank in 1438. Although he held senior positions in the navy for forty years, he was involved in few sea battles and spent a great deal of time fighting on land.
