Abstract

A variety of representations of mediaeval ships are considered in order to arrive at a view of the nature of bowsprits of this period and the means of securing them to the ship. The relationship of these stem ropes to other heavy warps or chains used to strengthen the hull and prevent hogging are considered. In this respect the author differs from some other scholars mentioned in regard to the interpretation of terms used in contemporary documents.
