From the slight evidence available – mostly pictorial, seals, manuscript images and church windows – it can be established that two methods of shortening sail were in use in the middle ages, bonnets and reef points. However, no image of reef points appears later than 1528, until their reappearance from 1665. In the interest of placing them on record, the earliest representations of reef points are listed and described with illustrations of many of them.
