Mediæval Ships Part XIII Stem Ropes Part 3

Abstract

This is a further detailed examination of the structure of medieval ships, in this case, the use of Stem Ropes. Textual and pictorial sources are carefully examined; Spanish, French, Venetian and English – from textual to medieval painted glass, coinage, Bayeux stitch ships and seals. The design of medieval ships to cope with the demands of being at sea and the carriage of cargo is at the heart of this article. An alternate point of view from another author who denies the utility of stem ropes is presented. The author concludes, “The matter is not yet ripe for dogmatic statement”.
