The Society Annual Lecture 1954: Naval Uniform

By George Naish, published May 1955

Abstract

The article is full of historical detail on naval uniforms from their beginning to the 1950s. It was illustrated with slides (only a few are reproduced) and dressed figures (from the NMM collections) and supported by relevant documents (those of 1787-1812 being referenced in an Appendix. The story of naval uniform is carefully told with its connection to the army and marines and to civil society made plain. Recourse is made to anecdote as much as to primary archival sources.
