The Navy List Part II

By W. G. Perrin, published December 1911

Abstract

This paper traces the history of the Official Navy List, which was first published in 1814 with the support of the Board of Admiralty. This superseded ‘Steels List’ prepared privately since 1779 by Steel and Goddard. The paper includes in full their memorial to the Board requesting official recognition of their list, which the Board rejected. The author gives details of how the content of the Official List, and other private lists developed across the nineteenth century, in response to the emergence of new specialisms such as Engineers, Navigators and Reservists, and other inclusions such as uniform regulations.
