The Navy of the Province of Fukien
Abstract
MANUSCRIPT No. 5 of the Hirth collection in the Royal Library of Berlin was written about 1850 by a functionary of the navy, at the order of the authorities. It is a manual of instruction in shipbuilding for the navy; and it has all the faults of books composed in that way, by men not quite familiar with the subject they write upon. In spite of these objections it is of high value, since technical books from China are scarce in European libraries, and it gives a great number of highly interesting terms descriptive of the details of ships.
