The Teign Shanty Festival: Call for Maritime Historians!

May 2021

We have been contacted by the excellent Teign Shanty Festival who are looking for maritime historians to give talks on historic ships or any related subject relevant to a maritime theme. During the festival they will be hosting talks on a variety of subjects including scrimshaw, wooden boat building, the history of whaling, mussel fishing, willow crab/Lobster Pot making and various other maritime themed subjects. The 2019 festival was a great success and this year the  tall ship the Johanna Lucretia will be in port over the whole weekend.

Maritime experiences on offer at the festival include

  • Maritime Wood Carver
  • Wooden Boat Builder
  • Traditional lobster pot weaving
  • Traditional Flag Maker
  • Knot Tyers
  • Heritage Sieve & Riddle producer
  • River Teign Shellfish Company
  • Maritime Storyteller
  • Liverpool Shanty Workshop
  • Shanty Talk & Singing
Weather permitting, there will also be Pilot Gig Rowing “taster” sessions over the weekend.

The festival is held on 3-5 September at numerous venues in and around the ancient and beautiful port of Teignmouth in Devon.
