Abstract

Lately so-called ‘Artificial Intelligence’ has made headline news. Whereas the AI community has promised for 50 years that computers would soon be smarter than human beings, actual success in producing results that challenge human performances has been limited, the most prominent being computer programs for playing chess. But now claims are raised that computers may write texts that appear to be written by humans with further claims that these programs could obliterate whole areas of human text production. A cynic may say that nowadays lots of newspaper articles read like they had been written by computer programs, but what about scientific texts? Will articles in The Mariner’s Mirror be superseded by computer output? This writer tried to get an answer by asking the most hyped program, ChatGPT, questions about nautical history.
