Bridge queries Davis Hannay’s assertion that officers bought commissions or postings in the Royal Navy [MM Volume 2, Issue 4]. In his experience the monies exchanged when officers changed ship were the payment of debts to the mess and for the purchase of items of equipment for the wardrooms and their cabins etc. He goes on to point out that this system was commonplace at the time.
