Note: A Seventeenth Century Sailor

Robinson reproduces Richard Braithwait’s 1631 description of a sailor in his book ”Whimzies or New Cast of Character”. In the essay Braithwait highlights the virtues of the Stuart period seafarer but is not afraid to also mention his failings. Nevertheless he does acknowledge the privations they suffered in pursuing their trade and the lack of reward for their labours.
