By Richard Hill, published February 1999

Abstract

LORD LEWIN, who died in January 1999, was a President of the Society who never interfered in the work of the Officers but was always ready to offer support. He was arguably the most influential person in the organization and management of the Navy and Defence since the Second World War. He became First Sea Lord in 1977 and was a natural choice for the even more responsible position of Chief of the Defence Staff, a role he assumed in 1979.
