The death of Stephen Roskill deprived maritime scholarship of one of its most eminent historians. When his naval career came to an end he was appointed Official Naval Historian for the Royal Navy in 1949. He was commissioned to write the official naval history of the Second World War, which was published in three volumes between 1954 and 1961. His books and articles not only demonstrated the quality of his research, but also his capacity to enthral his readers.
