Obituary: Helen Wallis OBE DPhil FSA FRHistS

HELEN WALLIS, who died in February 1995, was a historian of international renown. She was Chairman of the Council from 1972 to1989, followed by a period as an Hon. Vice-President. The sudden death, in 1971, of Captain T.D. Manning, editor of The Mariner’s Mirror, created a major problem for the Society, which was overcome by Christopher Lloyd volunteering to fill the role. Being Chair of the Council at the time, this threw up a further vacancy which Helen agreed to fill on a temporary basis. In the event, the temporary appointment lasted some seventeen years.
