Obituary: Sir Victor G. Shepheard, KCB RCNC

Abstract

Sir Victor Shepheard, who died in December 1989, was the last of the traditional Directors of Naval Construction for the Royal Navy. In 1915 he joined the Grand Fleet as Constructor Lieutenant and fought at Jutland in Agincourt as Damage Control Officer. As Director the quiet Porpoise class submarine, the guided missile ships of the ‘County’ class and the ‘Dreadnought’ nuclear submarine programme all benefited from his leadership. He also served as a Hon. Vice-President of the SNR.
