Obituary: W. L. Wylie
Abstract
William Lionel Wyllie (1851-1931) was a noted marine artist and the inaugural Chairman of the Society for Nautical Research. He also sat on the Victory Technical Committee, painted several major pictures to illustrate the ship, and was (in 1929) elected an Honorary Vice-President of the Society in recognition of his Panorama of Trafalgar within the museum that accompanies the ship, and which he also strongly supported. His style may be considered comparable to those of the Younger Van de Velde and 18th-century English masters in its detailed depiction of both specific details of construction and equipment and background conditions of sea and weather.
