Abstract

Lord Fisher and Sir Lionel Halsey are said to have quoted a couplet about patience greater than Job being required of those in the Admiralty waiting room. This article identifies the source of that couplet as the autobiography of Matthew Bishop, 1744, and describes some of the other tales told in The Life and Adventures of the autobiographer.
