Peking and the last China Coaster

Abstract

This is the author’s first-hand account of his time as engineer on ships on the Tientsin to Shanghai route at various times during the period 1928 – 1962. Particular attention is given to the last China Navigation Company steamship the Poyang built in 1941 in Hong Kong and sold in 1962. A comparison is made of two visits to Peking in 1933 and 1962 and the advances made by communism as well as the negative results of the regime.
