The Society Annual Lecture 1969: The Pilot Gigs of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly

By R. H. C. Gillis, published May 1969

Abstract

Gillis shares his extensive knowledge of pilot gigs and, having explained the method of construction, he discusses the eventful lives led by boats with known histories. In 1953 Gillis was asked whether the Newquay Rowing Club would be prepared to purchase a Tresco, Isles of Scilly, six-oared gig. Visits to Tresco over the following years led to the purchase of a number of boats. Further inspections and trials highlighted the need for extensive restoration but the expenditure of £2000 ensured the seven historic vessels would remain seaworthy for a further one hundred years.
