Gives the results of visiting the sites of the Portsmouth Semaphore stations, discovering which remained at the time of visiting, their current state and which of 3 types of building each was. Establishes type built on Square Tower at seaward end of Portsmouth High Street and that stations were not built on church towers. Brief mention of Plymouth branch line. States use discontinued 1848. Semaphore not to be confused with earlier shutter-telegraph system. Includes photographs of various stations.
