Abstract

During the Napoleonic Wars the great demand for British servicemen could not be satisfied by the different systems of recruitment then in use, as briefly described by the author. He devotes this interesting and well documented paper to explain the several ways followed for enlisting petty thieves, and other law offenders, whose sentences were released or commuted if they became members of the crew of any HMS or army regiment, detailing cases and conditions in which they were applied.
