Richard Barnett: an Anglo-Jewish Sailor at the Battle of the Nile

By Richard D Barnett, published May 1985

This is an analysis of a manuscript document broadly covering Admiral Lord Nelson’s pursuit of the French invasion of Egypt including the battle of Aboukir Bay.

Richard Barnett (or Abraham bar Baruch), being able to read and write, may have become a signalman or officer’s clerk while serving aboard HBMS Vanguard at that time.    He was able to copy verbatim the Aboukir Bay battle log of Vanguard’s Master Mr Clodd.  Social conditions of the time are discussed and a general description of Nelson’s Mediterranean campaign is given.   There is a transcription of the “journal” and a discussion of its provenance.
