Robert Fitzroy: Aboard H.M.S. Thetis and H.M.S. Ganges 1824-1828

By Frederick E. Ellis, published February 1989

Abstract

A series of personal letters written by Robert Fitzroy while serving as a junior lieutenant on-board HMS Thetis and HMS Ganges. Largely relating to family matters, the letters to his sister and father provide an insight into Fitzroy’s attitudes to naval life and his concerns about separation and promotion, with interesting though brief mention of professional topics, including the Cisplatine War (1825-1828). The series concludes with the announcement of Fitzroy’s promotion and appointment to command of HMS Beagle and her proposed employment surveying the South American coastline.
