By Charles H Firth, published August 1926

Abstract

Arguing the need to update the Dictionary of National Biography, perhaps by the addition of a specialist collection of naval biographies, this article presents corrected, revised and additional details on the lives of noted English naval commanders around the time of the English Civil War. Supported by numerous references, the article presents revised details of the lives of William Batten, Edward Popham, Richard Deane, Robert Blake and Nehemiah Bourne, among others.
