A Ship of Hans Burgkmair

By H.H. Brindley, published March 1913

It is known that several of the original blocks signed H. B. have on their backs the names of the cutters. The signature H. B. is without question that of Hans Burgkmair, who was born at Augsburg c. 1473, and died in 1559. Though far less rigging is shown, and some of it seems inaccurate, this ship of Hans Burgkmair has certain features in common with the Kraeck . In Hans Burgkroair’s ship the mizzen yard is represented very like the crossjack yard of much later times, not only in its being so much squared. This feature of the woodcut greatly shakes our faith in the technical knowledge of the artist.
